CUKR #4 / Body

The fourth issue of Cukr focuses on the body and thematises it from different perspectives: as one of the bases of figuration, as a battleground of beauty ideals, as a space of pleasure, as a commodity, as work, as a space of artistic practice, as a pop-cultural expression, as an object of theoretical reflection, and above all – as a possibility of constant change. Each body is its own theme: although we all have bodies, no one has a universal bodily experience. Cukr #4 is therefore not looking for universals, but for specifics, details and inferences that suggest that – whatever we want to say about the body – we are only at the beginning, says Manca G. Renko, editor of the new issue of the magazine.

The 144 pages of the fresh magazine include articles by Mara Anjoli Vujić on artistic practices in Kapelica, Eva Mahkovic and Katja Perat on the body as a testing ground for discipline and/or pleasure, and Ed Džafić on man-eaters, Lev Kreft on figuration, Katja Gorečan on hearing loss, Niena Nana on trans bodies and minds, and suggestions for theoretical readings on bodies by Darja Zaviršek, Tadeja Troha, Zdravko Kobet, Lilijana Burcar and Mark Kržan. An interview with philosopher Catherine Malabou by Aleš Mendiževec is also published. The main essay this time is by artist and sex worker Sophia Giovanitti, who discusses the sale and control of bodies in a time of pandemic.

The rich visual design includes works by Vanja Bućan, Mina Fina, Leon Žoudar, Marko Pogačnik, Primož Zorko, Aleš Rosa and others.
