The story of a community and its photographic depiction.

In the 1950s, in a small village in the deep Natisone Valleys, two steps from the border with Tito’s Yugoslavia, a factotum carpenter decided to photograph his community. After returning from France, where he had fought during the Second World war, Tin Piernu, a self-taught photographer, composed a remarkable gallery of faces by portraying his village folk.

Starting from an until then unknown archive of glass plate negatives, the volume sets out to reconstruct the photographic accomplishments of Tin Piernu, who outlined his world in a simple, incomparably candid way, without any artistic or reporter-style intents, thus enabling us to scrutinise an otherwise unpreserved section of humanity.

The book brings forward 200 photographs approx., selected from what was left of this village photographer’s archive, by ‘re-reading’ them in three textual and iconographic segments providing the context to the work in accordance with several viewpoints.
