What is photography? Something that eludes, writing with light, or “just” an image that misses the world? Although flat, the photography is reminiscent of the multidimensionality of the world in incredible, sometimes exciting ways. It is an art that is often perceived as direct, objective, and unambiguous, but it has radically changed its status and true face several times during the 20th century. Therefore, there is a need for new theoretical considerations and interpretations of what is seen.

In this book, Sandra Križić Roban discusses events in the field of art photography in a national context, bringing individual authors in connection with events at the international level. The introduction, in which the medium determines in historical-artistic continuity, is followed by eleven author's chapters - personal artistic strategies that confirm the peculiarity of photography as an autonomous creative practice. They are characterized by a variety of reflections on the status of photography within artistic, social, political, national, gender, and other contexts.

The book is illustrated with numerous photographs, conceived as a summary of key post-war events in the field of art photography and eleven monographs of selected artists.
