Tihomir Pinter / Tromostovje
"Today's Tromostovje, formerly the Lower and then the Spital Bridge, is certainly one of Ljubljana's most iconic landmarks. It was called the Lower Bridge because a little further up the river another bridge, the Upper Bridge, also called the Shoemaker's Bridge, was leading into the city, so called because of the Italian-style shoemaker's huts that were placed on it. The lower one was called Špitalski, after the Špital shelter on the other side of the river. Anyone wishing to pass from wider Central Europe through the city to the Balkans and beyond could only do so via one of the two crossings; the townspeople, of course, charged a 'reasonable' toll. Just beyond, the traveller could also get a night's lodging in a 'hospital'..." Matjaž Kmecl
