Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea accompanied Pieter Hugo's survey exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany. Essays are by the museum's director Ralf Beil and curator Uta Ruhkamp. The monograph spans 13 years, from Looking Aside (20036) through to the previously unpublished Californian Wildflowers (201415, taken in San Francisco and Los Angeles) and the 201516 Beijing work, Flat Noodle Soup Talk. Each body of work is introduced by a short text by the artist. According to the museum, "More artist than anthropologist or documentarian, Hugo captures the 'moment of voluntary vulnerability' with a pronouncedly detached, but at the same time also empathetic, concise visual language, creating in this way true to life portraits of powerful directness."

Pieter Hugo was born in 1976 and lives in Cape Town. He is the winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award 2008 and the Discovery Award 2008 at the Rencontres d'Arles festival.
